Gainesville Pilgrimage

Every true Tom Petty fan knows that Tom was born in Gainesville, FL.  Have you made your pilgrimage yet?  The closest I've been was seeing Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers play a show at The Bayfront Arena in St. Petersburg in 1993.

Just prior to their first Gainesville Homecoming show.  But over the years fans, friends and family members have sent me pictures of places they've visited on their pilgrimage to Gainesville, FL.

Where would you go and what would you want to see in Gainesville?  The site of Mudcrutch Farm?  Tom's childhood home?  Dub's before they tear it down (wait I think they might have done that already)? Gainesville High School?  The Tench Building?  The University of Florida campus? Casa Dega (actually Cassadaga, FL) All these places would be cool to see.  But my favorite song from The Last DJ reads like a checklist.

Goin' down to Lillian's Music Store
To buy a black diamond string
Gonna wind it up on my guitar
Gonna make that silver sing

Like it was Dreamville
A long time ago
Million miles away
All the trees were green
In Dreamville

I keep wakin' up all by myself
With a blue jay in my brain
Flappin' his wings, makin' me sing
It was just about to rain

Like it was Dreamville
Where I was born
Light years from here
And the air smelled good
In Dreamville

Like it was Dreamville
A long time ago
Light years from here
And the trees were green
In Dreamville

Ridin' with my mama
To Glen Spring's pool
The water was cold
My lips were blue

There was rock and roll
Across the dial
When I think of her
It makes me smile

Like it was Dreamville
A long time ago
Million miles away
All the trees were green
In Dreamville, in Dreamville

Yeah, it was Dreamville
A long time ago
Light years from here
And the air smelled good
In Dreamville, in Dreamville

In Dreamville, Tom sings about Gainesville with love and it almost sounds like a sleepy Georgia town as opposed to the amusement park picture that most people have in their heads of that area of Florida.  But Tom mentions two definite places you should go see if ever in Gainesville.  Lillian's Music Store, which I think is a bar or something now and Glen Spring's Pool.  Glen Spring's pool is currently part of a restoration project and you can read more about it here.
