Lyrics

[Verse 1:]
I’m gonna make my way through this world someday
I don’t care what nobody say
American dream, political scheme
I’m gonna find out for myself someday
But I’m half-lit, I can’t dance for shit
But I see what I want, I go after it
And my girl’s alright, treats me nice
Sayin’ nothin’ but a woman puts out that light

[Chorus:]
I got a dream I’m gonna fight til I get it
I got a dream I’m gonna fight til I get it right
Til I get it right

[Verse 2:]
Oh well, my baby no doubt dreams further out
Makin’ moves to get us someway someday
Well my honey don’t trip, shoots from the hip
Tell me everything gonna be OK

[Chorus]

[Verse 3:]
Well, my mama so sad
Daddy’s just mad
‘Cause I ain't gonna have the chance he had
My success is anybody’s guess
But like a fool, I’m bettin’ on happiness

[Chorus x2]

This song works pretty well with open chords throughout but
switching between barred chords on the heavier verses and
airier open chords on the chorus can give the song a bit more dynamic and flavor.

Note: the "B C B" off of the C is not played in chords

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers return to their roots in ’60s garage rock on ‘American Dream Plan B,’ the first single off their upcoming album, ‘Hypnotic Eye.’

The three-minute song can be heard below care of Rolling Stone, where Petty admits the song was a tough sell to his band, whose collective reaction was silence when he first played them the song. “I said, ‘Listen, I think we have something here, but we’re going to have to get excited about it.’”

Against a tight, down-and-dirty Mike Campbell guitar riff, Petty sings the verses — which are about a guy who’s still fighting for his chance — with his trademark snarl, but the song opens up to a bright, pump-your-fist chorus. After an acoustic break, Campbell unleashes a solo straight out of ‘Louie Louie‘ before Petty returns for a final verse.

‘Hypnotic Eye’ will be released July 29, but those who pre-order the record on Amazon or iTunes beginning June 10 will be able to download five of its tracks immediately.  On Aug. 3, Petty and the Heartbreakers will embark on a two-month tour of North America. Steve Winwood is slated as the opening act.
